When the owner began his career as jeweler, originality and inspiration in jewelry were overlooked in favour of the magnificence and profusion of precious stones. His revolutionary creations made him the master of Art Nouveau jewellery. Drawing his inspiration from nature and influenced by the Japanese artists who were being discovered in the West through the world fairs, he created jewellery which depicted entire scenes; pieces of jewellery which were in themselves miniature sculptures in which an entire animal and plant kingdom found expression. At times, when naturalism tended towards symbolism, the plant became magical, the animal mythical and the theme allegorical. Audaciously for the period, he used the female form as a means of ornamentation, following the example of the Renaissance artists. Very often he depicted woman as an allegory: half woman, half animal, often mysterious and troubled but nonetheless endowed with a disturbing sensuality. The beauty and originality of the pieces of jewellery created by owner is not simply due to the inspiration of their design. He did not hesitate to make use both of techniques and materials considered unfashionable, such as horn, ivory, semi-precious stones, enamel and, of course, glass, which he combined with gold and precious stones. His talent earned him the admiration and the patronage of high society. Two of his most prominent clients were Sarah Bernhardt, for whom he created stage jewellery between 1891 and 1894, and Calouste Gulbenkian, the famous Armenian businessman, a great lover of art and an astute collector, who purchased over 100 pieces of jewellery from owner, which today are on display in Lisbon at the Gulbenkian Foundation.
