Experts estimate the age of this unique sedimentary stone to be 200 million years. The uniqueness of this all-natural material rests in that no two pieces are alike, neither in colour nor in design. Each piece is a one-of-a-kind piece of art crafted by nature. Slate consists of thin layers of stone, which are mined largely by hand, and often under very difficult conditions. As the layers of stone are separated, unique patterns and colours emerge. The colours are formed millions of years ago by oxidation of different metals, while water trickled between the layers of stone. The emerging colors can range anywhere from black, silverblue and green to brown and bright orange, even purple tones. The natural unevenness and variation in structure of up to 1/8” are characteristic to authentic colour slate and add to its uniqueness of each piece. Sometimes a layer of slate can be peeled of, which is natural for this layered stone, and new colors and patterns can emerge
